Make the most of your visit

Feel comfortable, before the first drop of water.

You do not need to arrive at a Turkish bath knowing every custom. A good first visit begins with clear questions and a willingness to tell the attendant what feels comfortable. Clothing, privacy and service arrangements vary between venues, so use this guide as a conversation starter when planning your Amethyst visit.

Start with a few questions, not assumptions

When booking, ask which parts of the hammam ritual are included and who will carry out your treatment. If you have a therapist preference, need particular privacy arrangements or are visiting as a couple, explain this before reserving. A booking for two does not automatically mean a private spa or simultaneous treatments.

Ask about the expected arrival time, changing facilities and where your belongings can be kept. Keep the confirmation somewhere easy to find so you can check your date, treatments and agreed price at reception.

Clothing and the pestemal wrap

A pestemal is a lightweight woven wrap associated with Turkish bath culture. It is not a substitute for asking the venue what you should wear. Confirm whether swimwear or other bathing clothing is required, whether a wrap is supplied and what you should bring yourself.

Different baths may have separate areas, different session arrangements or specific privacy rules. Respect the instructions given for the venue and ask the team if anything is unclear. For a practical packing checklist, read what to bring to a Turkish bath.

Tell the attendant what feels right

The kese scrub uses an exfoliating glove; foam washing is a separate stage of the traditional bath ritual when included. Let the attendant know if you want gentler pressure, would like an area avoided or prefer a pause. You can ask them to explain the next stage rather than trying to guess what happens next.

A bath ritual and an oil massage are different services. Confirm which you booked and whether there is a separate massage after the wash. You can compare the hammam ritual with our massage options before your appointment.

Keep the bathing space calm and private

Keep your phone away in changing and bathing areas. Ask before taking photographs, and never include other guests or staff without their permission. If you want pictures of the venue, check where photography is permitted rather than assuming an empty-looking room is available.

Use a quiet voice and follow staff directions in wet areas. Give yourself time to move between spaces without rushing. If you are unsure about footwear or where to rinse, a quick question is more useful than copying another guest whose booking may be different.

Check the bill and any service charge

Before confirming your appointment, ask for the total, currency and included services. At the end of the visit, check whether extras or a service charge apply. If you choose to leave a gratuity, ask how it can be given; do not assume that one tipping percentage or payment method applies everywhere.

The price and package guide explains the details worth comparing. A clear quote lets you concentrate on the experience when you arrive.

A few helpful answers

A comfortable visit starts with clarity.

Do I need to know Turkish bath customs before visiting?

No. Ask the team to explain the venue’s clothing rules and treatment sequence. Tell the attendant if you need a pause or gentler pressure.

Can I take photos inside the hammam?

Ask staff where photography is allowed. Do not photograph other guests or staff without their permission, particularly in changing and bathing areas.

Is there a fixed tipping rule?

Do not assume a fixed percentage. Check whether a service charge applies and ask about the venue’s arrangements if you wish to leave a gratuity.
